Futureworld

Futureworld ~ I was just talking about Peter Fonda and this flick on this blog recently so when I saw Futureworld was on Encore Action, so I DVRed it. It’s been at least a serious three decades or so since I’ve last seen it. It’s nowhere near as good as I remembered it, and despite being a feature film, looks barely above television quality, bad for even a Samuel Z. Arkoff production. it does still have its merits though.

Futureworld is the 1976 sequel to the popular 1973 scifi thriller Westworld, and was followed a few years later by the very short-lived CBS TV series “Beyond Westworld,” which was even worse, as demonstrated by it only lasting five episodes.

In Westworld, written and directed by Michael Crichton, the Delos Corporation has created three ‘amusement parks’ – WestWorld, MedievalWorld, and RomanWorld – populated by lifelike androids where guests can indulge in any fantasy they can imagine in each park genre, including having sex with and/or killing the androids. A malfunction affecting all the robots makes them suddenly attack and kill all the guests, highlighted by the Gunslinger, as played by Yul Brynner, and terror ensues. So ends WestWorld.

In Futureworld, Delos seems to have recovered from this PR nightmare and gone back into business. Fonda and Blythe Danner are newspaper and television reporters invited to see what the new Delos is all about and make sure it’s safe. They elect to visit FutureWorld, one of the new parks that have been added. There is some great dialogue between the two regarding newspapers being dead, nice call from 1976.

Most frightening about the film is how much the parks resemble Disney in design and visuals, but I suppose that’s on purpose. On the down side the acting is abysmal and the sexism is humiliating. That the technicians must be gay or robots if they don’t succumb to Danner’s charms is one of the more pitiful bits. There’s also a painful conspiracy subplot about Delos replacing world leaders with robot doubles.

Yul Brynner as The Gunslinger does appear in footage from the first movie and in Danner’s bizarre dream sequence. Too bad he couldn’t be in more. As a true scifi movie villain, perhaps he could have dragged this flick up a few notches from its bad telemovie level.

Lost Hits of the New Wave #4

“Hello Again” by The Cars.

The Cars were at the start of the New Wave but this entry, the fourth single from “Heartbeat City,” comes from late in 1984, well after the MTV video revolution. In fact, at this time, Ric Ocasek and The Cars were at the forefront of the music video world and recruited the legendary Andy Warhol to direct this one. He appears throughout, and also look for a very young Gina Gershon.

The song, my favorite from the album which is full of great tunes, both wildly popular and largely unknown, seems to me to be about The Wizard of Oz, but the video seems to focus on the dangers of gratuitous sex and violence in music videos. Somehow that seems too appropriate.

Jane Russell Passes Away

Sex symbol, actress and bra spokesperson Jane Russell passed away today of respiratory failure at her home in California. She was 89.

Jane Russell was initially discovered by Howard Hughes, not because of her acting talent, but because of her 38″ bust. Hughes financed her first film The Outlaw, made her a pin-up queen with WWII troops and the millionaire airplane designer even developed a special bra for her figure.

Russell appeared in many films over her career including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Gentlemen Marry Brunettes, Young Widow, The Las Vegas Story, His Kind of Woman, The Paleface and Born Losers, the biker flick that infamously introduced Tom Laughlin’s Billy Jack character to audiences around the world. Later she appeared in commercials for Playtex, promoting their ‘cross your heart’ bra.

Her later years were filled with some Broadway and charity work. We’ve lost another legend, she’ll be missed.

A Big Brother First

CBS was happy to announce that last night they had a “Big Brother” first, or at least a first for the American version.

Anyone who knows anything about the show, or its history elsewhere in the world knows this is really nothing new. As a matter of fact, it happens all the time. Of course for American TV, this is a big thing.

Last night, apparently Head of Household Rachel and her erstwhile shomance hunk Brendon christened the HoH bed. Yep, that’s right, the first sex on American reality television happened last night on four different cameras in the bedroom. Rachel and Brendon’s parents must be sooo proud. Perhaps the couple have forgotten that not only is everything they do filmed, but that there are also thousands of paid subscribers to the live feed.

Perhaps what they really forgot is that ratings are flagging for the once reality TV giant and the network will be doing everything they can to boost ratings… wait, maybe they know all about that…

Of course the best part, or maybe the worst part, hmmm… let’s make that the saddest part is what Brendon said to Rachel after it was all over. “I’m sorry.” I wonder what for? It could be for sooo many things…

Perfect Blue

Perfect Blue ~ This is quite possibly the best anime I have ever seen. Not only is it that good but it deftly illustrates the difference between Japanese and American animation. America makes cartoons of what isn’t possible, while Japan creates things like Perfect Blue – a straight thriller with almost zero fantasy elements.

This tale of pop idol Mima trying to make the jump from teeny bopper superstar to a grown up serious and sensual actress while being stalked by a deranged fan – is not the usual fare for anime. No swords, giant robots or magic schoolgirls – no martial arts or even tentacle sex – just solid drama, story and characters. This is don’t miss, but be warned, even though it’s animated – this is not for kids. Sex and violence abound. Perfect Blue is very Hitchcock with just a touch of Gaslight, recommended.

Space Hotel

Launching in 2012 will be the Galactic Suite, a space hotel where visitors can spend three days in Earth orbit for the low low price of $4.5 million.

Passengers will get to the hotel via Russian rocket and get to see the sun rise sixteen times a day. And that’s not even mentioning the joy of zero gravity sex for couples who want to take that plunge.

Go Veg!

It would seem that so far the coolest and the hottest of the Super Bowl commercials this year, is the one that has been banned from being shown. PETA shoots and scores!
